The black lotus lantern fish is a hot freshwater fish because the personalities of the black lotus lantern fish and the lantern fish are very similar. The head is larger and slightly pointed. The mouth is subsuperior, the cleft is arc-shaped, and the snout is round. The eyes are large and located on the side of the head. The dorsal fin is located in the center of the back of the body and is slightly upright and triangular in shape. It has 9 to 10 fin rays in total. The distance from the beginning to the tip of the snout is smaller than the distance to the base of the tail; there is also a small adipose fin without fins on the caudal peduncle. The pectoral fins are small and oblong, with 10 to 12 fin rays. The front part is slightly raised at the beginning, and the distance from the beginning to the tip of the snout is smaller than the distance to the base of the tail. The anal fin is very long, starting below the end of the dorsal fin. The front end of the anal fin corresponds to the left and right sides of the dorsal fin, and extends backward until the caudal fin passes. It is composed of 23 to 24 fin rays. The pelvic fin is located on the abdomen, close to the anal fin, and consists of 8 fins. There are 37 lateral line scales. The tail fin is forked.
The base color of the body of the black lotus lanternfish is light yellowish brown, the back is reddish brown and shiny, the abdomen is olive green, and the edges are silvery white. There are three vertical stripes of red, yellow and black on the middle side of the body. Each fin (back, chest, abdomen, anus, tail fin) is colorless and transparent or light yellow. There are red patches on the upper part of the eye, and the lower part is white. Under the light, it emits a bright and dazzling light as the fish keeps swimming, like a small colored lantern.
