The Northern Armored Turtle
The Northern Armored Turtle is scattered in southwestern Connecticut and Long Island, south to southern Florida, west to central Texas, and north including the Mississippi River Basin to southern Illinois and southwestern Indiana. There are also independent colonies in northwest Indiana.
The Northern Armored Turtle is active between April and October. During the warmer months, you can see them wandering around the water in search of food. If the resting areas dry up, the turtles will migrate across the continent into permanent bodies of water, or they may bury themselves in the soil and undergo aestivation. They are so terrestrial that they can often be seen crossing the road, and many turtles have died as a result.
