Female gray-blue flat-tailed sea snakes are often larger than males. The ideal male body length of an adult gray-blue flat-tailed sea snake should be about 87.5cm, and the ideal female body length should be about 142cm.
The gray-blue flat-tailed sea snake's back is mostly blue and gray, its belly is mainly yellow, and its body is covered with black horizontal stripes. The lips are yellow and the head is mainly black. The abdomen of the gray-blue flat-tailed sea snake is flat, and the nose and snout are also flat. The snout scale is a single large scale; there are 21 to 25 rows of irregularly distributed scales on the body. Its body is mainly in the shape of a slightly flattened nearly tubular shape, with a high snout and a large scale on its forehead (some snakes may not have this scale). There are one set of preorbital scales and two postorbital scales, 7 to 8 upper labial scales, the third to fourth upper labial scales are close to the eyes; there are five lower labial scales, touching the chin. There are 213 to 245 scales on the abdomen, 37 to 47 tail scales in male snakes, and 29 to 35 tail scales in female snakes.
